Tasmanian hemp producers are hoping for their largest ever season.

Crops will be grown around the state from October through to March, with the hemp going to the international market to be used in food and clothing.

Phil Warner from Ecofibre Industries Australia says up to 175 hectares will be grown this summer.

Mr Warner says hemp is a burgeoning industry in Tasmania.

"The increase in population worldwide and the consumption of fibres as well as food, there is a need to look at crops that can produce both on arable land because that is precious commodity that the world is lacking," Mr Warner said.
